When you have a Peruvian mother and an American father, large family gatherings involve many a linguistic travesty. Like the time everyone thought my gringo uncle was talking about his five “dolores” (pains) instead of his five “dólares” (dollars). Or the time a cousin’s girlfriend told my grandfather she was “iglesia” (a church) instead of “inglesa” (English). And I can’t even get into the amounts of words my Peruvian grandmother has invented thinking she was saying things in English. So naturally, when I saw the hilarious video our friends at HuffPost Latino Voices put together I felt right at home. Special shout out to Michael Bloomberg for inspiring @ElBloombito – should get old, but it never gets old.
