Probably some of the most embarrassing experiences of my early adolescent life involved going shopping with my Peruvian mother, a woman who views pretty much any transaction as negotiable. That lady adamantly trying to get a discount on an iPod at Best Buy? That would be my mom. The woman haggling at Nordstrom like there’s no tomorrow, with zero regard for the fact that their prices are fixed? Yup, my mom. Every time she comes home from a store it’s like an episode of The Price is Right in my house: various family members get rounded up and forced to guess how much she paid for things, so that she can scoff at us and announce a price at least 35% lower than whatever we guessed.
As mortifying as this was in my teenage days, I have since come to respect it and love it.
