Erick Rincon, 16, Spins Mexico's Newest Craze

Erick Rincon is a 16-year-old DJ and producer from Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He just finished secondary school last year and looks like your average teenager, but he’s been producing tribal guarachero tracks for about three years now.

Tribal is a mix between between cumbia (lots of percussion) and electronic music (rave-y sounds, horns) that started in Mexico City and now has a massive following throughout Mexico. Some of the biggest exponents of the genre are DJ Mouse, DJ Alan Rosales, DJ Tetris, as well as the up-and-coming “Colectivo Tribal Monterrey,” which Erick Rincon is a part of. You can hear tribal music at La Bodeguita de Rafa in Mexico City and Arco Iris Club, where Erick is resident DJ.

I personally love tribal, and ever since my friend Toy Selectah passed along some tracks last year, I’ve been trying to get to know more and more about the producers, DJs, and the whole scene in general. It hasn’t been easy as it’s still kind of underground, but I predict this rhythm is gonna be infecting clubs and raves around the world soon.

Keep a look out for DJ Erick Rincon– he’s been signed to Pollinate Records in London and will release an upcoming EP. I’m really looking forward to it!
