As the first Mexican woman to win the Prix Benois de la Dance, Elisa Carrillo made history. The Prix Benois – named after Alexandre Benois – is so prestigious that some have called it the Oscar of the ballet world.
Carrillo is the prima ballerina at Staatsballett in Berlin – she’s also the first Mexican woman to hold this title. She received the Prix Benois for her role in Romeo and Juliet.
In an interview with CNN en Español, she talked about the significance of this recognition. “It was a beautiful night that I’ll hold in my heart,” she said and that will also motivate me to keep working, to promote my country, my company,” she said.
On Twitter, she dedicated the award to her fellow Mexicans. “I want to dedicate this award to all the Mexicans,” she said. “Let’s never stop fighting and working for our dreams.”
In a few weeks, Carrillo will find herself in Mexico, where she’ll perform at the Auditorio Nacional de la Ciudad de México.
