If you’ve ever thought to yourself that you don’t know enough about Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling’s relationship, then you’re in luck because the Cuban-American actress sat down with People Chica to talk about her family. Mendes, who is a mother of two, explains that having her daughters learn about the language and customs that were always present in her household is a priority. And she’s been able to get it done with a little help from her parents.

“Esmeralda mostly speaks Spanglish right now,” she told People Chica. “It’s really cute. She’s definitely bilingual, and it’s really important for us to make sure that she’s not only familiar with the language, but also with the culture. My mom, who lives 15 minutes away, make it is easy because she speaks to the girls in Spanish and cooks them Cuban food. And we’re always listening to Cuban music. It really is a big part of our way of life. I wouldn’t have it any other way. My dad, who has been here for 45 years and still doesn’t speak English, is a real asset. It’s so cool because now that I’m trying to make sure that my girls speak Spanish, it’s like, ‘Ok, Dad, take them,’ because I know that all they’re going to speak with him is Spanish.”

As Refinery 29 points out, it’s not the first time the couple has spoken about the bicultural household. In an October appearance on The Ellen Show, Gosling explained that Eva’s family loves to throw out “ay que rico baby.”
