It seems like Univision wasn’t too thrilled with Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Farruko’s choice of wardrobe during his performance at the 2021 Premios Juventud award show on Thursday night (July 22).
Farruko, who was born Carlos Efrén Reyes Rosado, stepped out on stage wearing a t-shirt with the words “Díaz Canel Singao” and an image of the Cuban flag printed on the front. He wore the shirt in solidarity with the people of Cuba, who are currently protesting the country’s communist government. Some viewers say that he was allegedly blurred out during the broadcast so that the shirt wasn’t visible.
“Díaz Canel Singao” is an explicit reference to Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel. According to El American, the disparaging term describes a “repudiable person who does unpleasant things” and “an evil, mean and vile person who has no empathy for anyone or anything.”
Cuban citizens have started calling Díaz-Canel a “singao” to show their anger towards the country’s communist regime. Soon after videos of the Cuban protests started to spread, the phrases “Díaz Canel Singao” or “Díaz Canel is a singao” began going viral on social media.
Díaz-Canel has made it clear that he’s not a fan of being called the term. He mentioned earlier this month on Cuban TV how the term was going viral on social media and – without saying her name – spoke on how former porn star Mia Khalifa posted a video using the expletive. “They went to all YouTubers and influencers, including a certain artist with certain characteristics,” Diaz-Canel said. “She started by supporting the blockade, and it seems that later she was pressured and ended up saying that I am a tyrant.”
No matter Díaz-Canel’s sentiments, “singao” continues to spread across social media platforms with full force.
With Farruko’s latest fashion statement, something tells us there will be growing t-shirt sales in the coming days.
