GLAAD, a leading organization that guides the conversation when it comes to LGBTQ+ content, is celebrating Our Heritage Month with a list of Latine LGBTQ+ Trailblazers in our communities. From now until October 15th, GLAAD will be profiling folks across politics, media, and literature.
This social media campaign is set to lift our voices and bring visibility to the people in our communities that are changing the game when it comes to representation and awareness. It’s also a means of connecting with those not in the know about who we are as people, changing minds and hearts at the same time.
The daily profiles, which will be available in English and in Spanish, will feature high-profile celebrities and individuals from Broadway to Hollywood and more. And it will pay special attention to those up-and-coming LGBTQ Latine artists that people are talking about or that you should absolutely know about in 2021.
First up on the list is Wilson Cruz.
Cruz is an actor, advocate, and icon known for his stand-out role in My So-Called Life, where he played the first openly gay actor to play an openly gay teenager on primetime TV. He’s also known for playing Angel in the Broadway tour of Rent and for recurring character appearances in Noah’s Arc and Star Trek: Discovery; the latter of which he is making history as the first openly gay couple in the Star Trek universe.
Monica Trasandes, GLAAD’s Director of Spanish-Language & Latinx Media & Representation, added to the conversation and excitement at Cruz’s nomination by saying, “This list is a snapshot of the amazing Latine leaders, both past and present, who have paved the way for greater LGBTQ visibility, inclusion, and acceptance in the world of media and arts, and we’re honored to be able to amplify their work this Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month.”
