Essential workers are the backbone of the earth right now. From transportation to healthcare and food delivery, the group continually puts their lives at risk so that we can continue to live ours. One in three jobs held by women has been deemed essential, according to The New York Times. Most of them are women of color. Indya Moore’s mom is one of those women.
The “Pose” actor took to Instagram to publicly express their pride and appreciation for the work their mother is doing—and she’s not the only one in the fam who’s showing up. Moore’s cousin and brother are also essential workers. The Bronx, where Moore’s mother works, is a particularly vulnerable area. The Washington Post called it “New York City’s coronavirus capital.”
More than 70% of New York City’s essential workers are Black, Asian and Hispanic, according to Buzzfeed News.
“I’m so proud and grateful for my mom and her boundless and ever-growing, intentional and care-ful love,” Moore wrote. “Sending love to all you essential workers out there right now, most of which are black and brown folks.”
On May 1, millions of essential workers across the nation went on strike to make their concerns heard. Keeping the powers that be accountable will be more than a one-day effort as the country plans for an imminent, gradual reopening.
