- Coronavirus deaths passed more than one million people worldwide this week, with the largest death toll occuring in the United States, where more than 200,000 people have died since the pandemic began this year. The deaths have amounted to more than those caused by H.I.V., dysentery, malaria, influenza, cholera, and measles combined, and the virus continues to spread throughout the globe. [NYT]
- Joe Biden and Donald Trump will face off tonight in the first of the 2020 presidential debate, moderated by Fox News host Chris Wallace. Wallace has said the topics will include the Supreme Court, COVID-19, the economy, “race and violence,” and the upcoming election. He’s also expected to ask both candidates about their records. [CNN]
- Two new wildfires in California have killed three people while destroying parts of the state’s famed wine country, including the famed, 41-year-old Napa winery Chateau Boswell. The fires also decimated a community of tiny homes for homeless individuals, as well as a number of other houses. [NYT]
- A new Univision News poll that surveyed 1,962 registered Latino voters in the country showed that 66% of respondents are behind the Biden/Harris campaign, while 24% support Donald Trump. The poll also showed Biden was up among Latino voters in battleground states Texas, Arizona, and Florida. [Latino Rebels]
- While Coronavirus deaths have reached the one million mark, Mexico’s top Coronavirus official says that definitive data on COVID-19 fatalities won’t be available for “a couple of years.” Currently, Mexico reports 76,430 deaths, the fourth-highest in the world. [AP]
- As Senate Republicans prepare for a vote on Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, former presidential candidate Julián Castro told BuzzFeed’s News O’Clock podcast that Democrats should consider structural reforms to the court. “When those are the stakes, and Mitch McConnell is the one who’s abused this system, then yeah, I think we need to be open to considering either adding more justices or other structural reforms that will prevent this kind of abuse in the future,” he said. - AOC took Republicans to task, pointing out the hypocrisy of Republicans criticizing her for a $250 haircut, while remaining completely silent on the $70,000 Trump claimed in hair expenses in a bombshell report about his taxes. “Where’s the criticism of their idol spending $70k on hairstyling?” she wrote on Twitter. “Oh, it’s nowhere because they’re spineless, misogynistic hypocrites?
