Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation on the Supreme Court is disastrous for Americans–especially immigrants. Barrett, President Trump’s nominee, will fill the late Judge Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s seat. The judge was sworn in by sexual predator, Justice Clarence Thomas. SCOTUS is infected with many right-leaning members who don’t prioritize women’s equality, gay rights, or protections for immigrants. Thankfully, Latina Justice Sonia Sotomayor still sits on the nation’s highest court which is now mostly conservative.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has called the United States Senate’s confirmation of Barrett an attack on democracy. In a statement issued on the confirmation, Sindy Benavides, LULAC’s National CEO, said: “Replacing Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in this manner is irresponsible and a direct attack on our democracy.” She went on to confirm that LULAC is concerned about Barrett’s stance on voting rights, immigration, climate change, and reproductive rights–all issues that directly impact Latine people.

Immigration Hub released a statement reflecting similar sentiments. The organization’s Director of Federal Advocacy, Kerri Talbot, said: “Confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court is one of the most damaging moments in the history of American immigration policy.” She expressed concern that Barrett will “uphold harmful and cruel immigration policies for the indefinite future” such as family separation, Muslim bans, rescinding DACA, and allowing immigrants to die in detention centers.
