In Powerful Ad, Julián Castro Tells Donald Trump That “Words Have Consequences”

On August 3, 2019, a gunman entered a Walmart and killed 22. Just as with other mass shootings, the discussions turned to mental health and gun regulation, but many have also spoken out about Donald Trump’s role in the tragedy. Presidential candidate Julián Castro, in particular, has asked Trump to reconsider the xenophobic language he so frequently uses, and in a new ad, the Texas native doesn’t mince words.

“President Trump, you referred to countries as sh*tholes. You urged American congresswomen to “go back” to where they came from,” he said in the short video. “You called immigrants rapists. As we saw in El Paso, Americans were killed because you stoked the fire of racists. Innocent people were shot down because they look different from you. Because they look like me. They look like my family. Words have consequences. Ya basta.”
