May Day demonstrators and bystanders who were beaten down by police at a 2007 immigration rights rally in MacArthur Park are being paid $12.85 million by the the city of Los Angeles.

The payout, which was approved Wednesday, is one of the largest ever for misconduct by the Police Department and settles claims hundreds of people filed after the rally, when police dispersed crowds by beating people with batons and firing at them with beanbag rounds.

There were no deaths, but hundreds of demonstrators and journalists and 18 officers suffered injuries.

The payout is one of the final steps in a massive investigation launched in response to widespread criticisms that police used excessive force and violated civil rights.

A police body has also recommended three officers receive official reprimands and several others receive suspensions.

A scathing internal LAPD report blamed poor leadership and planning as well as the overly aggressive tactics by officers.
