- Wisconsin’s governor called the National Guard into the city of Kenosha after protests broke out in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake, an unarmed man who was shot at least seven times in the back by police and remains in critical condition. Several buildings were set on fire, including a probation and parole office. [NYT]
- Jacob Blake’s father said that his son is paralyzed from the waist down. It’s unclear yet if the damage will be permanent. His father also shared that the day of the shooting, Jacob Blake was heading to celebrate his son’s eighth birthday party when he stopped to break-up a fight that led to the attack from police. - The Republic National Convention kicked off last night, with appearances from Donald Trump Jr., Nikki Haley that included what the New York Times called baseless attacks against Joe Biden. Trump Jr.’s remarks praised his father’s management of the coronavirus pandemic, despite the U.S. having the highest number of confirmed cases.
- After a study that showed just 3% of Latinos use the term “Latinx,” Pew has another study that says more politicians are using “Latinx” on social media. Few of them are Republicans. [Pew Research Center]
- After being hit by Tropical Storm Marco, Cuba is now preparing for Tropical Storm Laura, which is expected to gain strength and eventually hit Louisiana and Texas. [Cuba]
- Brazilian congresswoman Flordelis de Souza has been accused of ordering the murder of her husband Anderson do Carmo, who was shot 30 times at their home in Rio de Janeiro in June 2019. De Souza has said he died amid a robbery, but prosecutors have implicated her and some of her children. [BBC]
- Actress Melissa Fumero sparked a debate on Twitter after pointing out white-washing on the Canadian adaptation of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which she starred on in the U.S.. in a tweet, she wondered what the population of Latinas in Quebec is after the Canadian version of the comedy cast two Latina characters as white women.
