- More than 500,000 are without power after Hurricane Laura made landfall in Louisiana on Thursday morning as a Category 4 storm. Many people did not heed a mandatory evacuation, although the storm has weakened to a Category 2. [CNN]
- Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old from Antioch, Illinois, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of first-degree intentional homicide after he shot and killed two people at the protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse arrived in Kenosha carrying a military-style semi-automatic rifle, shot two people and walked with his hands up toward police, who drove by him without stopping. [NYT]
- Athletes in the NBA, WNBA, Major League Baseball, and Major League Soccer are standing in solidarity with Jacob Blake and protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Tennis champion Naomi Osaka also shared that she wouldn’t play her semifinal match at the Western & Southern Open. [Time]
- Broadway On Demand, a new theater-streaming platform, will air a tribute to Broadway actor Nick Cordero. Cordero, who starred in A Bronx Tale and Bullets Over Broadway, died in July of coronavirus complications. [Billboard]
- Jennifer Lopez announced she’s starting a new skincare line called JLo Beauty, which she filed a trademark for back in December 2019. She’s been developing the line for some time and although there is no release date yet, it will include cosmetics and skincare products. [People]
- During the Republic National Convention, Trump made a show of appearing at the naturalization ceremony of five new American citizens. But, according to reports, the people who were in the process of being naturalized did not know or sign off on the process being used by Trump to campaign for himself at the RNC. [Slate]
- After unveiling a new bill designed to address Puerto Rico’s status and representation, AOC and Rep. Nydia Velázquez are facing some criticism from pro-statehood lawmakers who take issue with the legislation’s proposal of creating a status convention of delegates. “I believe that all Puerto Ricans should help determine the future of the island—not just a few,” Rep.
