Think of Cuba and what images come to mind? Old ladies smoking cigars, classic cars, political propaganda on decaying buildings… but is that all there is? Juan Carlos Alom’s photos of Cuba are a refreshing antidote to the tired clichés of el gallo y la guajira. His documentary photography of black youth and hippies takes viewers into unknown corners of Cuba. Alom’s experimental works incorporate elements of ritual, magic, and Yoruba religiosity into surreal tableaux. The retrospective promises to make viewers reexamine their perceptions of la Perla de las Antillas.

Palestinian-Dominican Soraya Abu Naba’a presents her second solo exhibition of abstract drawings and multimedia paintings of human morphology. Organic lines are assembled into pictorial tissue of dangling dendrites and porous membranes. No electron microscope is needed to visualize the ebb and flow of this vivid internal life.

Word of advice: If you actually want to look at art and not the back of someone’s head, get there early! The streets are clogged with throngs of fedoras, skinny jeans and handlebar moustaches by 8pm. Ramble on the main drag NW 2 Avenue between 21st and 29th street to catch most of the action. Expect plenty of photography and abstract geometry this Saturday. Highlights include the Miami Biennale, Cecilia Paredes’ digitally altered hallucinogenic photography at Diana Lowenstein Gallery, the archival digital prints reminiscent of the Dutch masters at the MADA New Media Festival at Hardcore Art Contemporary; and the surrealist, primitivist paintings at Pan American Art Projects.
