  • A mass shooting yesterday at a Valley Transportation Authority control center in San Jose left nine people dead. Officials familiar with the case report that the victims knew the shooter, who was a public transit worker. According to the Gun Violence Archive, this incident is the 232nd shooting in which at least four people have been shot in the U.S. so far this year. [CNN]
  • President Joe Biden has directed the U.S. intelligence community to redouble efforts investigating the origins of COVID-19. This comes after a U.S. intelligence report detailed how several researchers at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology had fallen ill in November, 2019 and had to be hospitalized. The president directed agencies and national labs to work closely with the intelligence community and report back their findings in 90 days. [CNN]
  • Mexico’s aviation safety rating has been downgraded by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. This move prevents Mexican airlines from expanding flights to the U.S. and means that U.S. airlines will not be able to sell tickets on flights operated by Mexican airlines. [NBC]
  • Joel Ernesto Soto, the police chief of the Mexican state Sinaloa, was shot and killed while driving. Soto had survived an ambush three weeks prior when a convoy he was traveling with was attacked. Sinaloa is well known for its cartel association and deadly violence. [BBC]
  • Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea is running to become the state governor in 2022. As Secretary of State, she became the first Latina elected into stateside office in New England in 2015. She is the first Latina to run for governor in New England and if she wins, she will be the first Puerto Rican governor in the mainland. [NBC]
  • As part of its 25th anniversary, Latina magazine relaunched this week as a digital publication. The first issue in the rebrand features a digital cover with singer Kali Uchis. [PR Newswire]
