Second-grader Leonardo Aguilar is already more socially aware than most of us. Exactly a month after Nikolas Cruz opened fire and killed 17 people and injured many more in Parkland, Florida, students across the country walked out of their schools to protest the lax gun laws in the United States. Aguilar decided to join the protest and walked out of his San Jose classroom. Holding a sign that read “Guns Are Cruel Not Cool,” he is the only one to have left his class at Trace Elementary School. The lone activist ended up heading down the street (escorted by his mother) to join a bigger protest happening at the nearby high school.
“I’m protesting for the Florida shooting. I made a poster – as you can see – and I came here,” he told CBS SF Bay Area, adding why he felt compelled to join the nationwide demonstrations. “Because guns are not safe and people get hurt. And teenagers shouldn’t bring guns to school.”
