Nearly one year after Hurricane María struck Puerto Rico – and especially with hurricane season here once again – the island still needs our help. As people try to raise awareness of Puerto Rico, one person who has remained committed is Lin-Manuel Miranda. To this day, his Twitter account still links to the UNIDOS program, which aims to raise money for the island. And now, he is also helping set up a new fund to promote arts on the island.
Miranda recently announced all of the proceeds from the show will go toward the fund, which he hopes will grow to $15 million in the next few years, according to Billboard.
The Broadway star plans to star in the show, which he has wanted to bring to his family’s home since the beginning. “Bringing [Hamilton] to Puerto Rico is a dream that I’ve had since we first opened at The Public Theater in 2015,” Miranda said when he announced the show back in November. “When I last visited the island, a few weeks before Hurricane María, I had made a commitment to not only bring the show to Puerto Rico, but also return again to the title role. In the aftermath of María, we decided to expedite the announcement of the project to send a bold message that Puerto Rico will recover and be back in business, stronger than ever.”
The show is set to premiere in January.
