Lucha Libre Takes Center Stage in Pokémon’s Newest Evolution

The Pokémon Company
For decades, lucha libre has been one of Mexico’s most iconic cultural exports—a mix of sport, theater, and national pride. This tradition stepped directly into the world of Pokémon in 2013 with the introduction of Hawlucha in 2013. And now they’re making their return with a new evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A as Mega Hawlucha.
Inspired by the masks, aerial acrobatics, and charisma of real luchadores, Hawlucha has always stood out as a Pokémon rooted in Mexican identity. With its new Mega Evolution, that connection is stronger than ever. The transformation amplifies its muscles, agility, defense, and signature flair, making every battle feel like a main event under the bright lights of Arena México itself.
For Latine fans, especially in Mexico, seeing a Pokémon embody the well established artistry of lucha libre is a reminder that our traditions are celebrated on the global stage. And The Pokémon Company is leaning into that heritage in a big way.
On September 25, 2025 (7:00 p.m. CST), Pokémon will partner with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) for an exhibition at the legendary Arena México, complete with four live matches featuring top luchadores, including fan-favorite Místico. Tickets will be available to purchase on Ticketmaster.

The event will also be streamed worldwide on CMLL’s official YouTube, bringing the energy of Mexican wrestling culture to millions of viewers.
When Pokémon Legends: Z-A launches on October 16, 2025, Mega Hawlucha won’t just be another powerhouse fighter. They’ll be a proud symbol of Mexican tradition, woven into a franchise loved across the globe. Just like lucha libre itself, Mega Hawlucha reminds us that battles are about more than winning—they’re about passion, spectacle, and identity.
