When there’s a celebrity breakup, it’s always the woman getting the criticism and the man being lauded, actress and singer Maribel Guardia rightfully pointed out this week. She specifically referred to Belinda’s breakup with Christian Nodal and defended the singer from the barrage of misogynistic comments she’s been getting since the two artists announced they were putting an end to their engagement.

Even though neither Belinda nor Nodal have discussed the reasons for the breakup, some fans have been quick to blame Belinda, something Guardia heavily criticized. “Poor Belinda has been bullied horrendously,” she said, in Spanish. “There’s always this thing against women. There’s always a lot of bullying against women, men are celebrated for anything, but women are sluts,” she expressed.

Guardia isn’t the first to offer up her opinions on the couple’s breakup, but her voice has been one of the strongest when it comes to pointing out the double standards in the treatment both are receiving.

She even brought up former Mexican President Peña Nieto to make her point. Right after separating from ex-wife Angélica Rivera, Peña Nieto was seen with another woman and celebrated for it. This, according to Guardia would not have been the case if Rivera had been the one to do it.

And when it comes to the engagement ring, Maribel Guardia is of the opinion that giving it back to Nodal or not is something Belinda must decide for herself, saying that “if he gave it to her, and she wants to keep it, that’s her decision.” Just as what she shares about the breakup, or what she chooses to do with her life from here on out. And the least people can do is respect Belinda’s decisions, just as they seem to be respecting Nodal’s.
