As the treatment of immigrants and protocols enacted at detention centers and Custom and Border Protection facilities face heavy scrutiny, a 40-year-old Mexican immigrant has died. He is the fourth person to die while in custody in the last few months.

The man’s identity is unknown, but he reportedly died at Las Palmas Medical Center. CBP apprehended him in El Paso on Sunday. Later, a medical professional evaluated him at a processing facility and diagnosed him with flu-like symptoms as well as liver and renal failure. He died on Monday after being hospitalized.

In the statement, CBP also said, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and his loved ones. CBP remains committed to ensuring the safe, humane, and dignified treatment of those within the care of our custody.”
