Yesterday afternoon, New York joined mass mobilizations planned in Mexico and all over the world to protest what student movement “Yo Soy 132” calls “la imposición” of PRI’s Enrique Peña Nieto as President-elect. According to protesters, Peña Nieto won the election fraudulently, through vote-buying (handing out debit cards to supporters), over-spending, and paying major television networks like Televisa for favorable coverage.

Both PRI and Televisa deny the charges, citing a lack of evidence, but that has not satisfied opponents, who turned out in the thousands in Mexico City’s center on Sunday to demand that the Federal Electoral Institute take action and investigate PRI’s campaign. We can’t say we blame the protestors – after all, the PRI held Mexico’s presidency in a 71-year death grip, often using coercive and corrupt tactics. Seems unlikely that the party has suddenly reformed and decided democracy is the jam. Also, let us not forget that Rebecca Black endorsed Enrique Peña Nieto. Yes, this Rebecca Black. SUSPECT.

This protest was only the 3rd official protest since the “Yo Soy 132” movement coalesced, and there will surely be more to come. You can check out footage from New York’s protest below, and keep track of the Yo Soy 132 movement here.
