  • Donald Trump has become the first American president in history to be impeached twice after the House charged him with “incitement of insurrection” for his role encouraging his supporters during a violent mob attack on the Capitol last week. Ten Republicans joined Democrats during the vote, which now moves to a Senate trial that will likely take place after Joe Biden is inaugurated. [NYT]
  • Federal officials have authorized a 5,000-person increase of National Guard personnel ahead of Joe Biden’s inauguration, meaning that more than 20,000 members of the National Guard could be stationed throughout Washington D.C., the city’s police chief said Wednesday (Jan. 13). Enhanced security concerns have continued to grow following pro-Trump supporters storming federal property on Jan. 6. [Politico]
  • A Bankrate survey finds that Black and Latino adults pay more than twice the amount in banking fees than white Americans. According to the report, Latinos pay an average $14 a month in ATM, overdraft and routine service charges for checking accounts at banks or credit unions, while Black adults pay about $12 a month.   • Mexican officials have said they plan to invoke labor provisions through the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement to ensure that undocumented migrant workers in the U.S. receive coronavirus vaccine, regardless of their status. Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard told reporters that it would be the responsibility of both Mexico and the United States to guarantee that all workers have guaranteed access to vaccines. [HuffPo]
  • The Human Rights Watch blasted Brazlian President Jair Bolsonaro for what they called efforts sabotaging efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 and undermining the rights of Brazilians. Bolsonaro has downplayed the threat of the virus and called vaccine efforts into question, despite becoming sick with COVID-19 and seeing it ravage his country. [NBC]
  • Cardi B has her first leading role as an actress: She’ll star in the comedy Assisted Living, in which she plays a small-time crook who finds herself in over her head when a heist goes wrong, according to Entertainment Tonight.   • Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez will headline Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’ swearing-in ceremony, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced on Thursday (Jan. 14). The largely virtual inauguration celebration will also include Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake and Ant Clemons. [CNN]
