  • President-elect Joe Biden plans to give his first presidential-style address to the American people on Wednesday to discuss the government’s pandemic response and the alarming spread of the virus across the country. According to an advisory sent to reporters, the speech will be delivered from Delaware and Biden will speak about “the shared sacrifices Americans are making this holiday season.” [NYT]
  • Another 778,000 people filed for first-time unemployment benefits last week, an indicator that job growth in the U.S. is still painfully slow. The number is higher than the previous week’s revised number of 748,000 claims, and it marks the second straight week in which first-time claims have seen an increase. [CNN]
  • Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas is reportedly one of three candidates vying to be the next chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a job that would involve helping Joe Biden navigate a global response to COVID-19 and rebuilding diplomatic ties damaged by the Trump administration.   • In a survey conducted in early September, Black and Latino respondents indicated that they have misgivings about a potential vaccine. 14% of Black respondents said they trust that a vaccine will be safe and 18% trust its effectiveness. Among Latinos, 34% said they trust a vaccine’s safety and 40% trust its effectiveness. Fewer than half of Black respondents and 66% of Latinos said they would definitely or probably take a vaccine if offered one free of charge. [WaPo]
  • Diego Armando Maradona, considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time, died of a heart attack this morning, his lawyer and spokesperson confirmed today. He was 60 years old. Read more here.
