Last night in Puerto Rico, shortly before 11PM, 22-year-old Nashaly Cristina Torres Vargas was murdered. Her death marks the 32nd woman killed on the island this year.

Torres Vargas was reportedly driving home alone when at least 50 shots were fired at her. She was struck multiple times, and died on the scene in Villalba, in the central region of Puerto Rico, where she lived and worked and raised her 2-year-old child.

Police have no suspects or motive at this point in the investigation.

For years activists have called for the declaration of a state of emergency to address the high rates of femicides. The push has been renewed in the past few months, as not only the count of women killed has risen, but also a starling number of missing young girls and women.

The call for change in Puerto Rico continues.
