We’ve been supporters of Washington Heights’ volunteer-run bookshop Word Up since 2011, when it set up shop in a temporary space uptown. The multi-language, community book store and art space has since flourished, hosting literary readings, music concerts, film screenings, theater productions, art openings, workshops, community meetings and talks, language salons, and tons of other great cultural programming in an area where independent bookstores are few and far between.

So we’re excited to report that nearly two years after Word Up was born, the shop has finally found a physical home. They have signed a lease for an actual store-front at the corner of Amsterdam Avenue and 165th Street!

No word yet on the official opening date, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted so you can stock up on your summer beach reading!
