Besides BBQ, there’s probably no food more beloved in Texas than tacos. And now one man is on a mission to give the Mexico creation its proper recognition in the The Lone Star State. Recently, taco advocate Mando Rayo released a “Taco Manifesto,” along with a petition requesting that tacos become Texas’ official state dish.
“Whether you grew up here in Texas or got here as soon as you could, chances are, you’re eating tacos,” the text reads. “In Texas, people eat tacos on a weekly basis, and to be honest, tacos have been trending since the 1800s.
“Rooted in Texas’ food culture, tacos are enjoyed all across the [Lone Star] State. In Texas, you can find tacos almost anywhere, not just at Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurants but food trucks, trailers, gas stations, restaurants of every culinary variety, barbecue joints, and even the class All-American diner.”
Working alongside Rep. Gina Hinojosa, Mando hopes to get Bill HCR 57 – which would give the tacos the official designation – passed. If it passed, tacos would join peach (the state’s official cobbler), pecan (the state’s official nut, pie, and tree), and jalapeño (the state’s official pepper).
