Another Anglo band gets Latinized. On September 28th, new wavers Tom Tom Club will release Genius Of Live, featuring select tracks from the album Live At The Club House, as well as a Latin-alt remix tribute to the smash hit “Genius Of Love.” The tribute will feature artists Ozomatli, Nortec Collective, Money Mark, and The Pinker Tones taking their own stylized stab at “Genius of Love” with Latin flavor.
Tom Tom Club was originally a side project by Talking Heads husband and wife duo Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz. The hits “Genius of Love“ and “Wordy Rappinghood“ were dance club scene regulars in the early ’80s and are still cult classics in nightclubs today.
The original has been repeatedly sampled in music since the early days of hip hop, from Grandmaster Flash to Tupac Shakur to T.I. So why not tap into the indie Latin music scene? Fitting considering Tom Tom Club is associated with Talking Heads, whose front man David Byrne heavily supports international music with his semi-independent record label Luaka Bop. Luaka Bop is responsible for releasing albums surveying eras and artists ranging from samba to tropicalia and ventures into afro-Peruvian, and psychedelic Cuban and Brazilian classics like Os Mutantes. He also discovered the pop-disco-funk Venezuelan band Los Amigos Invisibles.
