Fake news is circulating that Joe Biden was using a teleprompter during a recent interview on Telemundo. Eric Trump, President Donald Trump’s son, fueled the rumors that claim Biden was using a teleprompter. He tweeted “Unreal” with a 26-second clip of the interview overlaid with text that reads: “Biden caught red-handed using a teleprompter.” The post has been retweeted over 25,000 times. The false claim found it’s way to Facebook and Instagram as well.
CNN’s Fact Check reports that the rumor is part of Trump’s campaign’s strategy to wrongly convince voters that Biden is mentally impaired. Biden was answering questions from Telemundo viewers that were shown on a monitor during the interview. His answers were not previously programmed on a teleprompter. He looked at the monitor to address the person asking the questions directly.
Telemundo News tweeted that Biden didn’t use the teleprompter along with a video from the interview: “Recent social media posts claiming @JoeBiden used a teleprompter during an interview with Noticias Telemundo and anchor @jdbalart are absolutely FALSE.”
More importantly, during the interview, Biden was asked about the Obama administration’s record on mass deportation. A woman on the monitor asked the former Vice President “How can you guarantee this will not continue happening in our communities?”
Biden faced the monitor as he answered the question. He declared that “there are going to be no deportations in the first 100 days of my campaign.” Jose Diaz-Balart, a Telemundo anchor, seems surprised by the statement and asked Biden to confirm that he’s going to freeze deportations. Biden clarified that his policy will be to freeze deportations during his first 100 days in office and that the only people who will be subject to deportation are those who have committed a felony in the United States.
It’s no shock that the Trump campaign would be threatened by this news. The Trump administration has been notoriously evil to immigrants. Trump has been using all sorts of sly tactics to try to with the Latine vote.
