Cecily Strong is one of SNL’s new cast members, and she comes out of the gate strong with Mimi Morales, this – okay, yeah, totally spot on – teenage Latina with lots of opinions and a Dominican boyfriend named Joel. (No relation.) It’s a Latino presence on the show that manages not to make her the butt of the joke – the character is strong and deep enough to not just be a generalization.
The voice of the Latino vote, on SNL, is uninformed, immature, uninvested, and not actually eligible to vote. I almost think it would have been funnier to have her be really smart and well informed, but not change the way she’s talking. Personal opinion.
