Naturally, if you invest $20,000 on your car sound system, you intend to make some noise. That’s why 47-year-old Nelson Hidalgo – who decked out his van with 80 speakers of varying sizes – headed to the intersection of 127th Street and 35th Avenue in Queens to blast his tunes at about 10:45 p.m., and he attracted many passersby in the process.
But not everyone was feeling his impromptu sidewalk dance party, and noise complaints started pouring in. The loud music even reached the Mets’ bullpen in Citifield, and police eventually showed up to arrest Hildago, according to AM New York. Misunderstanding how laws work, Hidalgo – who had a Coors Light in hand – said, “I know it’s illegal, but it’s the weekend.”
Apparently, blasting his speakers is something he does often enough to know that it usually doesn’t end with arrest. “How come I don’t get a ticket this time? I usually get a ticket or it gets thrown out; or I pay a little fee,” he said. But this time, police charged him with second-degree criminal nuisance, general noise prohibition, disorderly conduct, and obstructing the driver’s view. He’ll have to return to court on August 1.
