Selena Gomez is opening up about the types of negative comments she receives on social media, including not being Latine enough. In a recent interview on On Purpose with Jay Shetty, the Mexican-American singer talks about the backlash she receives, alongside her fiancé Benny Blanco.
During the interview, Shetty and Blanco talk about the negative comments that public figures get through social media comments. Gomez points out that “women have it much worse.” She then gives examples from her perspective when people talk about her appearance. “Not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough. I’m – I don’t know. There’s just so many different things that come up in my face that I can’t help but see,” Gomez said in the interview. “I fall victim to like looking at things and it really, it doesn’t add to your life, but it’s just so difficult from the choices of you know the people you date. Like nobody cares about those kinds of things with men.”
“And so I think we just carry a lot. Oh yeah, my weight’s a big one too,” she continued. “Everyone just has something to and it’s really making me sad – and not even sad – because you know what? No, I’m not a victim, everyone. I just think it’s made me a tad bitter. And I feel really guilty for saying that.”
The couple also talks with Shetty about other topics such as their relationship, their proposal, and the power of social media.

Gomez and Blanco are currently promoting their collaborative album I Said I Love You First, which dropped last week (March 21). One of the LP’s highlights includes a Spanglish version of “Muchacho de Los Ojos Tristes” by Spanish-British singer Jeanette. Gomez’s new take is called “Ojos Tristes,” featuring The Marías’ María Zardoya and Josh Conway.
