It’s been more than a year since Shakira and Gerard Piqué officially announced their split, and now more things are being revealed about their breakup.

During a recent interview with People en Español, Shakira explained that she found out Piqué had “betrayed” her shortly after her father, William Mebarak Chadid, was admitted into the hospital after taking a serious fall. At the time, there were rumors that the ambulance was called to Shakira’s home in Barcelona because she suffered from an anxiety attack stemming from a verbal fight with Piqué.

“[My father] went to Barcelona to console me after I was consumed with sadness because of my separation,” Shakira said. “While he was at Milan’s first communion, he was gravely injured in an accident. Everything happened at once. My home was falling apart. I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU.”

A few months after their breakup, Shakira told Elle magazine that she had experienced “probably the darkest hour of my life.” She also described it as a “bad dream” and a “disappointment.”

During the latest interview with People en Español, Shakira also spoke about her new music and how it’s a “narrative that has developed along with events in my life” and how it covers “the different stages I have gone through spiritually, mentally and even physically.”

“I have gone through denial, rage, pain, acceptance, grief, hope, deception, hope again, excitement,” she said. “So many emotions and feelings that at times seem mixed, that didn’t seem to be able to coexist inside of me, that I have been able to untangle only through my songs, to understand myself better. Not to explain or justify myself, only to understand myself and tolerate myself.”
