Stan Lee continues to put in work. Aside from cameoing in almost every single Marvel property – most recently seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – he’s also attending comic conferences. This weekend, 94-year-old Lee – best known for creating Spider-Man and X-Men – attended La Conque in Queretaro. At the largest comic convention in Latin America, someone asked Lee what kind of superhero he’d envision taking on Mexico’s social issues. That’s when Lee revealed that he’s currently working on a Latino superhero.
“I wanted this to be a surprise, but I’m personally working on a Latino hero, that you’ll be seeing at the end of the year,” he said, according to AFP. “I want to make him as good as I can, as different as I can.”
The comic book world has in recent years made efforts to represent different ethnicities and cultures, but it’s still got work to do. There’s no information readily available about whether Lee’s collaborating with someone who is Latino or Latin American to give this character depth. However, in a 2014 interview with Larry King – where he also said that a Latino superhero was in the pipeline – he explained that he was working on a movie for new character Annihilator, a Chinese superhero, in collaboration with a Chinese production company. So here’s hoping he has input from someone who can actually speak to what it’s like being Latino.
