AfterHours @ Frost

Is traffic on the Dolphin Expressway stressing you out? Take a detour from the daily grind at AfterHours at Frost. FIU’s Frost Art Museum will hold the opening reception for two new exhibitions and the annual Fall Arts Preview on September 12 from 6-9pm. The centerpiece, Lydia Azout’s Out of the Ordinary Geometry, transports viewers into the realm of sacred geometry and the cosmos with large metal sculptures and video projections. FIU’s RadiateFM will pulse beats to get your chakras in check.

Bakehouse Art Complex: “From Blonde to Brunette, But Still Curly”

This exhibition is not about your cousin’s ever-changing melena. The exhibit at the Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC) will display the work of the artists-in-residence who use traditional techniques to make fresh, contemporary art. Unlike la prima’s black roots’ sudden switch to “Burnt Auburn No. 45,” the BAC’s focus is on change with continuity. Explore the labyrinth of eccentricities and chat with artists in their studios about their work in a very chill and unpretentious environment. For $5 (free for BAC members) enjoy Hatuey Beer, wine, and live entertainment in the patio on September 14 from 7-10pm.

Dot FiftyOne: “Repossessed”

What is it about turning 27 that makes you reflect on your mortality? Rock icons Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Curt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse all died tragically young at this age. Artist Guillermo Rivero delves into the doom-and-gloom of the 27 Club in his multimedia installation on the crisis of mortality called Repossessed. Drop by Dot FiftyOne on September 15 from 7-10pm for the opening, but please refrain from overdosing on the wine, rock stars. Also check out Lydia Azout’s bestial geometric sculptures in her Language of Silence series. Coinciding with the grander exhibition at the Frost Art Museum, Colombian-born Azout is having her moment in Miami.

CIFO: “Not Me: Subject to Change”

If your idea of psychoanalysis is making penis jokes and blaming everything on your mother, then you will have a raucous time at the Not Me: Subject to Change show at CIFO. The Foundation has brought together several artists from all over Latin America to reflect on the body and how it is used in a complicated world where boundaries,conditions, and borders are always in flux. The exhibition includes sculptures,installations, drawings, performances and videos that reflect on these themes within a psychoanalytic framework. Dominance and desire play important roles, yet don’t expect S&M that would make Sigmund Freud blush. The group show premiers on September 15 from 6-9pm.
