Here We Are, Entertain Us! – Self-Help Graphics

If there’s anything art can help you do on a chilly Saturday night while you sip on free wine, it’s reflect on your own nature. Cheesy, maybe, but absolutely true as many art shows take a look at humans, society and all those things that make this crazy mundo go ‘round. Victor Rosas takes his place among those minds by using the print as a canvas for his thoughts. Of Mexican origins, the artist takes inspiration from past art eras, putting cool elements like found objects into his work. This Friday, May 24 head to Self-Help Graphics for the opening of his show “Here We Are, Entertain Us!” which touches on what we humans learnt to expect and why The opening reception starts at 7 p.m. but you have ‘til 9 to experience an awesome epiphany – or just find new soul-searching questions to ask.

Alphabet Soup – Plaza de La Raza’s Boathouse Gallery

As you read them on this page, the letters forming this sentence might seem boring, familiar and dull but a significant number of Los Angeles street artists can transform even the most well-known letter into a true work of art. Thus the name of the upcoming show “Alphabet Soup,” a fantastic showcasing of some of LA’s best verses in the talent of forming beautiful letters. On Friday, May 24th see the complex work of artists like part-Salvadorean artist Retna and Mexican-American lettering legend Chaz Bojórquez. You might recognize their works from gallery to museum shows and many a city street and you can now see them next to artists like Cryptik and Defer. If you’ve never seen their work, this is a good chance to get familiar with lettering – you’ll never look at your alphabet the same way.
