Fabiola Torres-Alzaga – Steve Turner Contemporary

Imagine you’re in a room with playing cards surrounded by mirrors. Each way you turn, you get a different view of the room so that one room seems like a bunch of different rooms all at once. Magia! Well, sort of. More like arte. The work of Mexico City-born Fabiola Torres-Alzaga makes the viewer question reality even as they know the artist created the scenes. Her shows “House of Games” will include this display along with drawings and video work, all tied together by the thin line between illusion and reality. Head to the gallery on March 15 for an opening reception starting at 7 p.m. and jump into another dimension altogether — while staying inside the gallery, of course.

Hands-on Art Workshop – Museum of Latin American Art

So you keep seeing all this great art every weekend and after a couple free drinks you think – hey I can do this, too! I should be in a gallery! Pues, take that theory to the test with MOLAA’s upcoming workshop that lets an art educator discover your potential. Thursday, March 14 from from 4 – 5:30 p.m., budding artistas of any age can get a tour of the galleries and then go to the free workshop after. For inspiration, you will gaze upon Marta Chilindrón’s amazingly shaped works and then make a paper sculpture all of your own. Just be sure to make reservations by calling the museum and letting them know the next Picasso is coming.

DIY Silkscreen

Sculpture’s not really your thing? Okay, pues, how about silkscreening? Every third Saturday of the month, Self Help Graphics & Arts hosts a DIY silkscreen workshop that lets you take home a shirt with your very own artwork on its surface. Bring a couple shirts or paper and a transparency of a black-and-white image and you’re all set. The workshop takes place March 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and only costs $20 per person. Not a bad deal to show off your art on your own clothing.
