Reflections in Modern Mexican Silver: Consider the Context – LACMA

Bling. It might be a word we use a lot today but that doesn’t mean people from centuries ago didn’t get it, too. Take for example, the 1920s artisans in Mexico who created seriously cool silver objects for us to see today. Art History professor Dr. Penny Morrill looks closely at these objects and will give a talk at LACMA on April 14 at 3 p.m. about the stories each one holds. The handmade pieces show a move towards making jewelry that reflected traditional Mexican culture, so some pieces make creative use of their material to bring life to strange creatures. Dr. Morrill will also be around for a book signing afterwards and you can pick up copy of Margot Van Voorhies: The Art of Mexican Enamelwork at the museum. It’s 485 photos of legit silver pieces and Dr. Morrill can answer all your burning questions about them – except maybe where to find such cool bling today.
