Caligraffiti, a show that connects the abstractionists, U.S. graffiteros and calligraphic artists from the Middle East, opens this Thursday at Leila Heller Gallery. The show is curated by Leila Heller, owner of the gallery, and Jeffrey Deitch, resigning director of MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles.) The show includes almost 60 artists including LA2 or Angel Ortiz, a graffiti artist who was a big influence to Keith Haring. Other big name artists in the show include Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Retna, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and many others.

The Aesthetics of Static: Ricardo Milla
Ricardo Milla’s solo show at the Instituto Cervantes juxtaposes the natural progress of time with the human contraptions and methods created to record time. He uses installations of DVD players, photographs, digital prints, and clocks in his process. Milla has pieces in the Sol Lewitt Collection and the Museum of the City of Mexico. The Instituto Cervantes was created to promote the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures. This exhibit was curated by Santiago Espinosa de los Monteros, and will run through September 14th.

Mexican artist Lalo Sánchez del Valle creates work that he says manifests directly from his subconscious as anthropomorphic and mythological creatures.The show includes a mix of canvas, sculpture, bronzes and other mixed media and will be on view September 3 until September 21st at the New Century Artist Art Gallery.
