The Raging 70s: Latino New York

The Spanish language newspaper and self-proclaimed “campeón de los hispanos,” El Diario is celebrating its centennial anniversary by exhibiting archival photographs and paraphernalia in institutions across the city. This Tuesday, October 8th, at 5pm will be the opening reception for the show ‘The Raging 70s: Latino New York” at the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University. It is an exhibit of photographs taken by Bolívar Arellano, a man who captured unprecedented amounts of images in Washington Heights and the Bronx throughout the 70s. The photographs offer us visual documentation of historic Latino neighborhoods and people across the city.

Esther Ruiz: Marking Time

Esther Ruiz, a fellow Houston, TX native, is having her first solo exhibition in New York at Wayfarers gallery in Bushwick. Ruiz is exhibiting a series of sculptures composed of concrete, poppy-colored plastics and neon lights. The fun nuggets of geometricities are reminiscent of miniature landscapes with competing textures and transparencies. The juxtaposition of highly distinct materials is beautiful in a very interesting way. The opening reception will be this Friday, October 11th from 7- 10 pm. You can view the exhibit until October 27th.
