To offer an alternative (and in my opinion more legitimate) vision to contradict the Met’s high fashion-centered exhibit on Punk culture, a more gritty illustration of the Punk era will take place at Superchief Gallery this Monday. The show, featuring images from Martin Sorrondeguy’s book ‘Get Shot: A Visual Diary, 1985-2012,’ will be a One-Day-Only exhibit of material documenting 27 years of punk music and culture. Sorrondeguy has been a singer for the hardcore bands Los Crudos, Limpwrist and Needles and filmmaker for several films including ‘Beyond the Screams: A U.S. Latino Hardcore Punk Documentary. The exhibit will include images from his book, zines, new photos, and prints. All will be available for purchase and the party/exhibit will last from 5pm to 9pm.

It’s a fact that New Yorkers blossom in the summer. It’s our time to emerge from winter slumbers and quench our parched Vitamin D levels. We greet the sun with reverence and take advantage of shorter work weeks and the chance to party! In response to this expulsion of excitement, New York museums and art spaces oblige this desire by extending their hours. As a special supplement to Museo del Barrio’s Bienal, every Wednesday museo will stay open late to host a mix of music, artists’ talks and dancing. This Wednesday Alex Nuñez and Ernesto Burgos, two artists showing at El Museo’s Bienal, will give a talk concerning “chic” ads produced in the 1970s and the contradicting atmosphere of New York City. After the talk in las galerías beginning at 6pm, 5ifty5ive and resident DJ Les Carbonell will be mixing afrobeat, soul and house in the patio courtyard, so come see, listen, converse and dance this Wednesday at Museo del Barrio!

Laughter is an exhibit hosted at Apex art that explores the projection of laughter and its societal functions in the form of video and performance pieces by five different artists. In Yoshua Okón’s video installation ‘Canned Laughter,’ ex-maquiladora workers from Ciudad Juarez in Mexico produce laughter in a fictional factory. The chuckles from the all-female cast convey one of the functions of laughter– as a subversion to the permitted emotional expressions in the workplace. Canned laughter is constantly served to us on tv shows as laugh tracks that attempt to affect our reactions to content, so one could say it functions as a method of control. However, when laughter comes from the often disempowered and abused maquiladora workers, a resistance seems apparent. Check out the show which is on view until July 27th.
