The Graphic Canon, World literature through art and comics
The Graphic Canon is a three-volume trilogy that recounts classic stories of world literature but accompanies them with contemporary illustrations and graphic art. The first two volumes were released in 2012 and now to accompany the release of the third volume, Andrea Arroyo and Seven Stories Press have curated an exhibition of original artwork from the book. Stories like The Metamorphosis by Kafka or Lolita by Nabokov are illustrated by comic geniuses like Robert Crumb as well as more contemporary artists who put their personal spin on the story illustrations. The exhibit will be up at Grady Alexis Gallery until July 17th so go see the original artwork while it’s still being shown!

15 Beats: The Artists of My Plastic Heart
In the world of art toys reigns a space called myplasticheart in the Lower East Side. This art toy mecca functions as a shop specializing in art toys and as a mini gallery for illustrators and various graphic artists. The opening for work by Tatiana Suarez and Jason Levesque in May attracted an alternative crowd who squeezed their fairy costumes and raver gear in the tiny LES accommodations. Now, to highlight all the work myplasticheart has shown, Bunny Cutlet gallery in Williamsburg, has compiled a group show of artists who have shown at myplasticheart including Tatiana Suarez, Kelly Denato, Aya Kakeda, and many more.
It’s an eclectic mix of fantastical ambience, anthropomorphic figures, and coquettish illustrations. It’s on at Bunny Cutlet through July 19th.

POSE and REVOK Uphill Both Ways
Artists Pose and Revok, from Chicago and Detroit respectively, have their first show in New York at Jonathan Levine Gallery in Chelsea. Like a lot of artists, their work deals with the human condition and emotional conflicts involved in loss, love, hopes and dreams. More specifically, their work includes the perspective of the street artist who deals with legal oppression and censorship due to the public nature of street art and graffiti. For the first time, Revok’s collage of rainbow geometries and Pose’s sliced graphics of popped out caricatures of human expression are aggregated in gallery format and will show through July 27th. In addition to the gallery show, a large mural will be created on the Goldman Properties wall located on Houston and Bowery streets for a chance to see the work alive and in the public;s view.
