U.S. Senator Ted Cruz continued his rough start to the new year with another Texas-sized shellacking online Tuesday (Feb. 2), this time for seemingly not having any idea what some popular comic book storylines and characters are all about.
A clip of the self-described movie buff’s podcast was making its round showing Cruz trying to criticize liberals by referencing “rabid environmentalists” in the same sentence as Avengers: Endgame villain Thanos and the TV series Watchmen.
Problem is, everything that Cruz said made about as much sense as an X-Men timeline. Superhero fans and even creators were faster than a locomotive on Twitter to let Cruz know that he should probably brush up on his comic-book knowledge, including Watchmen writer Lila Byock, who didn’t mince words.
Comic book writer Ron Marz wondered what TV shows Cruz was watching since he muddled up his analogy from the start.
James Gunn, director of Suicide Squad, a D.C. Comics property, chimed in mocking Cruz about his superhero shortcomings.
If Cruz can get both Marvel and D.C. Comics enthusiasts to find common ground in thinking he’s as useless as an Infinity Gauntlet without the Infinity Stones, maybe bipartisanship in Congress can actually happen this year.
Or maybe folks just need to get back to ridiculing Cruz about more than not understanding how to correctly make pop culture references. Cruz’s Hollywood archenemy Seth Rogen thinks so. He wants you to remember that Cruz has displayed more shameful behavior that Americans should never forget.
