Tourism in El Barrio? These videos say maybe.

New Yorkers hate tourists. Except when tourists are giving the city their sweet, sweet money.

Granted, tourists are most obnoxious in those areas where they tend to flock. That’s why we hate Times Square and do our best to avoid it whenever possible. Maybe, you’ve probably found yourself thinking, if the tourists didn’t do the safe things everyone else does (the things designed specifically for them, rather than things that have to do with being in New York) they wouldn’t seem so awful. Maybe – just maybe – they’d benefit from the experience of visiting.

Enter Visit El Barrio, a “placemaking campaign” that seeks to make Spanish Harlem the latest thing in tourism. The campaign includes a series of videos hosted by Victor Cruz, showcasing El Barrio’s cultural highlights. I’m not sure the promise of shops that sell scented oils is going to attract hordes of photo-happy midwesterners uptown, but I may check out a couple of these spots this weekend myself…

Check out the videos. Do you think Spanish Harlem could really be the next “hottest destination”?
