The call for Argentina’s win during the 2022 World Cup telecast from Telemundo announcer Andrés Cantor circulated the internet instantly on Sunday, Dec. 18. When Argentina ended the match with a 4-2 victory, Cantor erupted into a heartfelt cry. Many were moved by the emotional call they had only heard — but there is now a video of the moment.
In the video shared online, you can see the announcer up close at the edge of his seat, pacing before Argentina’s Gonzalo Montiel made the game-winning penalty kick. Once the shot is made, Cantor bursts out his signature “GOOOOOLLLLLL” but in a blaring cry. He grabs his co-announcer next to him. His co-announcer, also emotional, holds his hand throughout this moment.
Watch it here:
Argentina is the world champion,” he repeats in Spanish. “Argentina is the world champion. Messi is the world champion. It couldn’t be any other way… 36 years, waiting… Argentina, Argentina is the world champion.”
Many fútbol fans are familiar with the Argentine commentator, who has been covering the World Cup since 1990. This was reportedly the first time that Argentina won in Cantor’s announcing career.
The sentimental game-winning call went viral earlier. “My heart is with the Argentinian Telemundo announcer,” wrote one user, while another added, “Someone hug Andres Cantor, the Argentine Telemundo announcer currently bawling his eyes out.”
