As a teenager growing up in New York and New Jersey, Daniel Buezo remembers wearing a lot of Ralph Lauren and Nautica clothes. While it made him feel stylish, he never felt connected to his cultural identity. As the son of immigrant parents from Honduras, he knew there was a way he could dress that would empower him as a proud Latino.

“I had never been on a horse and on a yacht before,” Buezo said. “We wore these things that represented American heritage and American culture, but they never represented us. We wanted to create something that made us look good and feel good.”

Today, Buezo is the co-founder and CEO of Los Angeles-based Kids of Immigrants, a streetwear brand that is “inspired by their roots, environments and life experiences.” Buezo and Weleh Dennis, both first-generation Americans, started Kids of Immigrants in 2016. This May will mark their seventh year in the apparel space.

“We were looking for a way to express ourselves,” Buezo said. “We wanted to create something with purpose and intention. We wanted to make an impact in our community and move in a way that was more than a consumer-driven product.”

Making an impact in their surrounding community was one thing, but Buezo wanted Kids of Immigrants to cross borders. He felt over the years that society’s consciousness had shifted in a way where more customers were starting to research the values of a company before they supported them – not only in the U.S. but across the world.

“I realized that Kids of Immigrants could be something that’s global,” he said. “People from everywhere can relate to our story.”

To help disseminate their story, Buezo travels across the U.S. and to other countries to set up pop-up stores in different communities. Recently, Buezo has taken the brand to Miami, Paris and Mexico City. Soon, he’ll be going to Toronto, New York, Texas and London.

“Now that we’re more established, there is a budget to take these trips and help us grow,” he said, adding that he enjoys his lifestyle as a virtual nomad – always on the go.

In Nómadas, a custom editorial series between Remezcla and Intuit TurboTax, Latine, creative professionals show how – with the help of current technology and online resources like TurboTax experts who’ll do your taxes for you virtually – they are redefining and transforming the remote working experience and becoming location independent.

According to McKinsey & Company, 87% of employees who are given the opportunity to work from home by their employer choose that option.

Buezo said he travels at least once a month. Before he co-founded Kids of Immigrants, his frequent flier miles were still at an impressive number because he worked as a tour manager for singer Kehlani.

“Traveling has really opened my eyes and allowed me to see that there’s a bigger world out there,” he said. “It’s made me believe that Kids of Immigrants hits so many demographics. Visiting these cities that are all melting pots is very inspirational.”

“Having someone I trust with my taxes is a big relief,” he said. “It’s one less thing I have to worry about. Having a knowledgeable person that can take care of my taxes and know about my expenses is such a weight off my shoulders.”
