Three Days in Mexico City: The Live Unscripted Recap

Cazadores tasting.

Over the summer, Remezcla partnered with Tequila CAZADORES® to offer readers a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to Mexico via our “Live Summer Unscripted” sweepstakes. Our lucky winner was 27 year-old LA native and Chicano artist Jose Chavez, who got to head to D.F. with his buddies for three days of adventures. Since we know the best adventures happen spontaneously – with no roadmap and no planning – we didn’t reveal the details of his itinerary until he landed.

“The fact that everything was a surprise kinda made us a little nervous since we didn’t know what to expect,” said Jose. But the nerves were replaced by excitement when he learned what was in store for his weekend.

Below, you can catch a recap of the special trip we planned for him, which included a private Tequila CAZADORES® tasting and dinner, a tour of the famed Estadio Azteca, tickets to the América vs Puma match, and a night out clubbing.

Day 1.

For his first night in Mexico City, Jose Chavez and his buddies were treated to a special meal and Tequila CAZADORES® tasting at Puebla 109, a restaurant and private members club housed in a restored mansion located in the heart of La Roma neighborhood. Since opening, this restaurant has become one of the city’s must try restaurants, recently dubbed by Eater as one of the 12 hottest restaurants in Mexico City right now.  It draws crowds of the young and fashionable who come for its striking ambiance and impeccable food.

The menu, built by chef Eduardo Garcia, features Mediterranean dishes made using seasonal Mexican ingredients. Jose and his friends got to sample multiple courses, including plates like burrata with figs, tartare, and roasted seasonal mushrooms with mojo de ajo.

The plates were all paired with a variety of Cazadores cocktails, made specially by a mixologist to complement the flavors of the meal.

On the second day of the trip, Jose Chavez and his friends were given a private tour of the Estadio Azteca stadium, which is home to the Club América team. Built in the 1960s to provide Mexico with a flagship venue for the 1970 World Cup, some of world’s most famous soccer moments have happened at Estadio Azteca.

It was on that pitch ringed with 110,000 fans where Pelé led Brazil to a World Cup victory in 1970 and where Maradona punched his famous goal known as La Mano de Dios and later dribbled past half dozen of English soccer players to score again.

Plus, it’s the only stadium to host two World Cup finals. During the tour, Jose was able to experience the stadium in a way almost no one ever gets to see it – empty and behind the scenes, soaking up the history in a place where so many soccer legends have stood.  “The Tour of the Estadio Azteca and being able to be stand on the actual soccer field was a once in a lifetime experience,” Jose said after the trip.

Day 3

America vs Pumas match.

After getting his VIP behind the scenes tour, Jose got to see what the stadium is like in full swing at one of largest games of the Liga MX season: América vs Pumas. As anyone who follows the league knows, this is one of the most exciting, deep-seated rivalries in the Liga MX –pitting América, a well-funded team able to sign big players, against Pumas, the upstart estudiantil team. It’s a rivalry that divides Mexico City in two, and the hinchas pack the stadium to the gills on match days, with the Monumental rooting for América and the Rebels going hard for the Pumas. Seeing the spectacle of cheering fans is one of the greatest experiences a soccer fan can get.

In the months leading up to the match, América and Puma had revived the rivalry’s glory days, facing off in a series of playoffs. In the first, América went home winners, but six months later, Pumas got their revenge and won. In short, it was reminiscent of the rivalry’s heyday in the 80s, and it made this match especially tense and thrilling.

From a special VIP seating area, Jose got to take it all in with some of the best views of the stadium, for a nail-biting match that he described as unforgettable.

Afterwards, he headed to a nightclub to keep the party going, where a table and bottle of Tequila CAZADORES® were waiting for him.

“This gave me a chance to experience Mexico in a way I’d always hoped to,” said Jose. “It was an amazing adventure.”
