Against the idyllic backdrop of snowy Park City, Utah, we talked to Diego Luna during the lead up to the world premiere of his second English-language movie Mr. Pig at the Sundance Film Festival. Featuring a road trip to a lush Puerto Vallarta beach and starring Maya Rudolph, Danny Glover, and an enormous hog, Mr. Pig is a touching portrait of a regretful father reconnecting with his daughter.

In his fourth feature-length venture as a director, Luna wrestles with strained parental relationships; it’s something he sees as a recurring theme in his movies. “It’s very clear to me now that I have daddy issues and luckily, that’s what my work is about – to reflect and to question yourself, to look inward,” Luna told us during a car ride to an early-morning screening of his film.

His relationship with his own father, Alejandro Luna – a renowned set designer in Mexican theater circles – isn’t exactly strained. During a particularly intimate post-screening Q&A, Luna revealed to a Sundance audience the heartbreaking reason why he’s so close with his father. “My mother died when I was two years old; that’s why I have so many daddy issues. And that’s why my relationship with my dad is so strong.”

Throughout our time with him – while we tagged along to his premiere and other promotional events for Mr. Pig – Luna was exceptionally open about his fears and anxieties, a topic celebrities seldom talk about publicly. He shared the ups and downs of being a director and what it’s like to share his art with a large audience.
