The final season of The Boys is now underway, and as we prepare to say goodbye to a show that, at times, has felt too much like real life, the actors are saying goodbye too. And if for us it’s bittersweet, for them it’s a whole different level. Remezcla sat down with Laz Alonso (Mother’s Milk), Tomer Capone (Frenchie), and showrunner Eric Kripke to talk about the final season, how they’re preparing to see the show end, and even possible cameos.

For Alonso, reading that final script hit hard. “There was real feeling, because the idea that this is the end, and then finally reading it is different. It hits you different. And, you know, throughout the season, there are dominoes that are falling that remind you that there’s no turning back. And there’s an emotional way to that.”

Capone agreed, even saying, “As long as you read the page and then you go like, oh, wait, I’m going to reread it. I want to read it again.” Which is apparently, exactly what happened.

Kripke even joked that as the writer, “It’s my job to worry for everyone,” while discussing whether there’s a pressure to live up to expectations. “I’m super stressed, but my job is to be a shield that keeps that stress from going down to the actors so that they can do their best work,” he said.

Alonso, meanwhile, was open about the challenges of the season. “This season, I was challenged with playing a different version of Mother’s Milk. It wasn’t as easy as the other four because the other four, I already thought I knew who the character was, and in this particular season, he takes a turn. He’s not necessarily the most optimistic version that we’ve seen in previous seasons.”

But that’s interesting. “I think that every season we’re challenged. Every season, there’s a new story that our character is telling and a new challenge that we’re dealing with. And so, it keeps our performance authentic and fresh.

And Alonso even teased that we might see a surprise or two in Mother’s Milk’s wardrobe this year, as he is a fan of wearing t-shirts with different faces on them. This came up while talking about music and what he’s listening to. “Conejo Malo, you gotta listen to Bad Bunny. And listen, wow, let me shut up,” he said before looking over at Kripke warily and then continuing, “season five…Mother’s Milk wears a lot of shirts of different artists. You never know. You never know.”

Mother’s Milk’ impeccable tshirt collection has featured artists from Britney Spears to DMX, Fat Joe, and Black Sheep. So maybe not Bad Bunny IRL. But a different kind of cameo nonetheless.

Just as we really don’t know where this story is going or how it will end. But considering what the real world looks like, we’re all that the ending we get in this fictional version of the world gives us hope for the real one we’re living through. At the very least, we know the actors loved it. That’s half the battle. No, perhaps three-quarters of the battle.

The Boys is currently airing new episodes on Prime Video every Wednesday.
