After months of anticipation, Starz premiered its new half-hour series Vida on Sunday, May 6 to glowing reviews (it currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Under showrunner Tanya Saracho – who’s previously written for Devious Maids, Looking, Girls, and How to Get Away with Murder – the series follows two estranged Mexican-American sisters, Lyn (Melissa Barrera) and Emma (Mishel Prada), who are forced to return home to East LA to deal with the death of their mother. In doing so, they discover a shocking side of her identity they never knew existed.

If you missed the season opener – or if you’re not a Starz subscriber yet – you’re in luck; you can catch the whole premiere episode here on Remezcla for Free.99. It’s one of the rare television projects that doesn’t merely pay lip service to representation; with its Latina showrunner, its all-Latinx writers room, and its ensemble, this is a prestige series that is all but unprecedented in its inclusion of Latinx creatives in all facets of the production.
